Whilst Canada will finish this Under-19 World Cup as the top performing associate, they are still some distance from challenging the full members, as today's plate semi-final against the West Indies showed.
West Indies captain Emmanuel Stewart won the toss at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval and chose to bat first. A 42 run opening partnership between Keegan Simmons and Bhaskar Yadram got things started before Yadram was out for 23. The captain was only able to contribute six runs to the total batting at three, but the innings really kicked on when Alick Athanaze came out to bat at number four.
He and Simmons put on 156 for the third wicket, the partnership ending when Athanaze was trapped lbw by Kavian Naress. Simmons kept on batting, eventually being the sixth man out having scored 166, the second highest score by a West Indian in Under-19 ODIs.
Aside from those two big scores, no other West Indies batsman really got a start, with only two other players reaching double figures. However the West Indies did still manage to post a formidable total of 323-8. Akash Gill was the pick of the bowlers with 4-54.
Canada lost opener Pranav Sharma for a second ball duck to start their reply, and in general struggled throughout. Arslan Khan's 31 and Kavian Naress's 61 were the only scores in double figures as they were bowled out for 136, losing by 187 runs.
Both teams will next be in action on Sunday, with the West Indies playing Sri Lanka in the plate final and 9th place play-off, whilst Canada will play Zimbabwe in the 11th place play-off.
