It was a performance that mirrored the qualification match versus Scotland that sealed Ireland's place in New Zealand.

A gutsy performance with the bat to post a total that was in the final event defendable. With Topping (23) and Grassi (32) combining in a second wicket partnership of 61, skipper Tector adding 36 and runs down the order from Neil Rock (35) and Josh Little (27) and Graeme Kennedy (37) weighing in for good measure the Irish had posted a bigger total than either Pakistan or Sri Lanka had managed against the Afghans.

Ireland chipped away with the ball and the Afghans were never able to build that big partnership or have anyone produce that big innings that would decide the game.

When the eighth wicket fell at 196, thirty more were required from the last seven overs and as the Afghans edged closer as a chance was dropped and a flurry of wides and a couple of no balls added to the tension.

Nine were needed when Josh Little claimed the wicket of Zadran in the 49th over and it was left to Max Neville to bowl the final over with Afghanistan needing 7 for victory.

A high full toss - a Free Hit that was a wide - a Free Hit which was a Dot - and Wafadar, as good as his name suggests, swung one high to cover where Graeme Kennedy held the catch to start the Irish celebrations.
