Namibia's hopes of another quarter final run at the Under-19 World Cup were dealt a blow today with a crushing defeat at the hands of Bangladesh at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval.
Namibian captain Lohan Louwrens won the toss and chose to put Bangladesh in to bat in a game reduced by rain to a 20 over per side contest. Bangladesh went on the attach straight away, scoring 33 in the first four overs before Pinak Ghosh was the first man out for 26.
This brought captain Saif Hassan - who has a first-class double century - to the crease. He initially let Mohammad Naim do the bulk of the run scoring, but soon accelerated. The pair put on 97 before Naim fell for 60 in the 16th over, and the runs keep on coming after that.
Hassan scored three sixes from the final over before finally being caught from the final ball of the innings. He had scored 84 from just 48 balls including five sixes. The Bangladesh total was 190-4 from their 20 overs.
A tough run chase for Namibia got even tougher when their top order collapsed, the first four wickets falling for 12 runs inside the first five overs. A knock of 55 by Eben van Wyk helped secure some degree of respectability for Namibia as they batted out their overs to score 103-6, losing by 87 runs.
Both teams will be in action again on Monday, with Bangladesh playing Canada and Namibia playing England.
