As Division Five of the World Cricket League heads into its first rest day, Jersey and Italy are sitting at the top of their respective groups unbeaten after two games.
Jersey took on their fellow Europeans Germany at the main Willowmoore Park Oval in Benoni, with the latter batting first after Jersey captain Charles Perchard won the toss. The German innings didn't start well as Daniel Weston was trapped lbw for a duck in the first over by Cornelis Bodenstein.
The second wicket then put on 48, followed by a 62 run partnership for the third wicket as the German upper order ensured that the poor start wasn't continued. Captain Rishi Pillai top scored for them with 46, and they were eventually bowled out in their final over for 248.
Jersey shared the wickets around, with Ben Kynman, Ben Stevens and Charles Perchard all taking two wickets each.
Jersey's reply started quickly, with Nat Watkins and Peter Gough scoring 42 in 6.3 overs before Watkins fell lbw to Asad Mohammad for 34 scored from just 20 balls. Gough was scoring a little more slowly, and he was the second man out for 36, by which time he'd put on 77 for the second wicket with Ben Stevens.
Stevens then put on another 52 for the third wicket with Jonty Jenner before Stevens fell for 53, whilst Jenner helped steer Jersey towards their target with an unbeaten 68 as they completed a five wicket win with 5.2 overs to spare.
The other game in Group B was on the A Oval at Willowmoore Park, with Vanuatu batting first against Ghana after winning the toss. No Vanuatu batsmen was able to get a start, with Andrew Mansale's 26 the top score of the innings. Obed Agbomadzie was the pick of Ghana's bowlers as Vanuatu were bowled out for 124.
Despite their low target, the African qualifiers almost managed to make a meal of their run chase, and could have lost were it not for the proverbial captain's knock from Peter Ananya who scored 50. Only two other batsmen reached double figures before they completed a two wicket win in their 34th over.
Over in Group A, Italy got their match against Qatar on the Willowmoore Park C Oval off to a great start when Gayashan Munasinghe had Faisal David Khan caught behind for a second ball duck. Unlike in their match against the Cayman Islands on the opening day, the Qatar upper middle order didn't contribute significantly.
Tamoor Sajjad top scored for the Qataris with 40 as they were bowled out for 209. Munasinghe finished with 3-52, but Italy's leading bowler was Hasn't Ahmed, who took 4-37.
Italy's run chase began with a 123 run opening partnership between Gian Meade and Rakibul Hasan, which ended when Hasan was bowled by Khurram Shahzad for 62. Meade was out in the next over for 51. A knock of 46 from Damien Crowley helped steer Italy towards their target, which they reached in the 42nd over to win by six wickets.
On the Willowmoore Park B Oval, Guernsey took on the Cayman Islands, with the latter batting first after their captain Ramon Sealy won the toss. Sacha De Alwis scored 60 from 73 balls before he was the second man out with the score on 115.
Captain Sealy was the next man to go shortly afterwards having scored 36, but the rest of the batting wasn't all that much to write home about, as they were restricted to 214-9 from their 50 overs, David Hooper taking 5-36.
Guernsey had little trouble chasing down their target, with Josh Butler's 93 the top score. Ollie Newey also chipped in with 54 from just 38 balls as they completed a six wicket win with 13.3 overs to spare.
Tomorrow is a rest day in Benoni, and the tournament resumes on Wednesday. Jersey will look to make it three wins from three in Group B when they take on Ghana, whilst Italy will look to do likewise in Group A as they play the Cayman Islands. The other matches in the two groups see Guernsey facing Qatar in Group A and Germany play Vanuatu in Group B.
