SCOTS cricketer Andy Umeed has told how he silenced sledging superstar Jimmy Anderson by bagging a brilliant century against him.
The 21 year old from Glasgow admitted he rates England paceman Anderson “probably the best bowler of all time.”
And Umeed couldn’t disguise his satisfaction at not only blunting his threat, but also shutting him up.
After his dogged 113 for Warwickshire against Lancashire at Edgbaston, Umeed grinned: “I am delighted - it was a really good battle while Jimmy was giving me a few words of encouragement every now and then!
“He is probably the best bowler of all time and it was almost surreal batting against him as I grew up watching him doing amazing things on the Test stage.
“It was a slow hundred, however that is what the team needed and after recent results we needed to front up and show some fight.
“I really wanted to lead from the front - sometimes you have to get your head down and earn your runs.”
Former West of Scotland and Poloc youngster Umeed was at the crease for a marathon 392 balls, lasting more than eight hours - and Warwickshire coach Ashley Giles said: “It was a superb knock.
“Anderson gave him the verbal treatment, but he answered that in the best possible way.
“Andy has been piling up good scores for our second team this season and it was great to see him carrying on the momentum when given his chance for the senior side.”
