The final day of the European WCL Qualifier has become a little more interesting as Norway are now level on points with Germany after the former won and the latter lost today in the Netherlands.
Norway were taking on France at the VRA ground in Amstelveen, and chose to bat first after captain Raza Iqbal won the toss. And it was the skipper who played a key role in their innings, top scoring with 104. He put on 134 for the third wicket with Rahul Shinde, who scored 63 himself in the Norwegian total of 231-6.
The second ball of the French reply saw Usman Shahid hit a return catch to Damon Crawford for a duck. France were soon 9-3 and they never recovered from there. Robin Murphy top scored with 37, but that was the only score of substance and they were bowled out for 131 to lose by 100 runs.
Norway's attention would then have turned to the match at Voorburg where their fellow Scandinavians Sweden were taking on the as yet unbeaten Germany. The Germans batted first after winning the toss and scored 225 before they were bowled out, Daniel Weston top scoring with 96.
In reply, Sweden lost Ashik Imtiaz early on, but still managed to hold their chase together. Shahid Mustafa scored scored 56, but it was captain Mitchell O'Connor who top scored with an unbeaten 70. He and Sabir Zahoor put on 83 for the fifth wicket before Zahoor was out for 32 and O'Connor hit two fours from the last two balls of the next over to secure a five wicket win.
The other match of the day saw Belgium take on Austria, with the Belgians batting first after Abdul Rehman won the toss. Belgium scored 172 before they were bowled out, Shaheryar Butt top scoring with 52. Kasthuri Arachchige was the pick of the Austrian bowlers with 4-32.
Arachchige then opened the Austrian reply with Mahammad Zalmai, and the pair got the chase off to a great start with an partnership of 107 before Arachchige was out for 56. Zalmai top scored with 77 before Shadnan Khan Armaan Randhawa took the Austrians home to an eight wicket win in 32.5 overs.
Tomorrow is a rest day, and the tournament will conclude on Thursday. Germany will take on Belgium, and the net run rate situation is such that a win should be enough barring a remarkably big win for Norway over Sweden. If Germany lose, a win for Norway will be enough. Austria take on France in the day's other contest.
