A rain affected opening day in Uganda has seen wins for Oman, Singapore and Canada as World Cricket League Division 3 kicked off.

At the Entebbe Cricket Oval, Oman captain Sultan Ahmed won the toss and chose to put fellow promoted side USA into bat. With a rain delay during the innings, the USA had 43 overs to bat. Fifty plus partnerships for the second and third wicket had USA reasonably well placed on 137-2 with 11 overs still to play.

Debutant Ibrahim Khaleel was dismissed having scored 48 - the top score for the Americans - and two further wickets fell with the score on 137, putting the USA on the back foot. Khawar Ali took 3-27 as they were restricted to 180-7 from their 43 overs.

Oman lost both their openers for single figures, but number three Aqib Ilyas clubbed 55 from just 36 balls before he was the third man out. Zeeshan Maqsood also chipped in with 46 as Oman chased down their DLS adjusted target of 184 with 3.2 overs to spare to win by four wickets.

In a match between old rivals Malaysia and Singapore at the Kyambogo Oval in Kampala, Chetan Suryawanshi won the toss and given the overcast conditions, unsurprisingly chose to field first. With the exception of Khizar Hayat - who scored 32 - Malaysia's batsmen never really got a start and were bowled out for 121, Anish Paraam taking 4-10.

The DLS calculations gave Singapore a slightly adjusted target of 123 from their 45 overs, and Paraam completed a fine all round performance with an unbeaten 50 to help Singapore reach that target in 31.2 overs to win by 7 wickets.

The match between hosts Uganda and Canada was the only one where the winners of the toss chose to bat first, with Nitish Kumar - taking a break from his studies at Loughborough University in the UK - making the surprising call given the conditions.

The match was reduced to 42 overs, and Kumar led the way initially with a run a ball 43. The real fireworks though came from Rizwan Cheema who turned the clock back to the promise he showed on debut by smashing 91 from just 44 balls to help Canada score 234-8 from their 42 overs.

Both Ugandan openers were dismissed by Cecil Pervez in the second over of their chase, and they never recovered from there. Pervez finished with 4-44 as the hosts were bowled out for 168, losing by 66 runs.

The tournament continues tomorrow with Canada playing Oman, Malaysia playing the USA and hosts Uganda taking on Singapore.
