Tranent and Preston Village cricket clubs have announced a merger.

The combined club, whose sides play in the East Leagues, will be known as Tranent & Preston Village Cricket club for the remainder of 2017.

The first and third teams will play at Meadowmill Sports Centre on the outskirts of Tranent while the second team will play at the Polwarth Oval in Prestonpans.

Tranent president Dougie Russell said: “This is a historic moment for the club and cricket in East Lothian.

“I am absolutely delighted that Preston Village have taken us up on our proposal to merge the two teams and I look forward to our new club forming three solid XIs over the coming season as well as continuing to play in the ESCA Development League.

“We are particularly excited about the chance this presents to put in place a sustainable player pathway for youngsters from the local area.”

Alan Grieve, Preston Village chairman, added: “We are thrilled to be joining forces with our good friends at Tranent.

“From our perspective this is the right way to face the challenges presented to cricket clubs in Scotland and we look forward to a promising future.”
