RISING batting star Michael Jones yesterday batted himself into the record books with a superb century for Scotland’s second string.
The Lancashire Academy youngster posted 173no as the Scots took charge of their three-day clash with Durham 2nd XI at Chester-le-Street.
His effort equalled the second highest individual score in a Scotland non-cap game, matching Michael Leask’s total against Yorkshire three years ago.
Jones looked on course to beat Ken Scott’s 203 against Durham University in 1984 until skipper Kyle Coetzer declared Scotland’s first innings on 370-8.
Opening the batting, Jones’ marathon effort lasted more than five hours during which he faced 230 balls, hitting twenty-two fours and three sixes.
He had fine support from former Durham all-rounder Dylan Budge who contributed 67 to a crucial fifth-wicket stand of 126.
Having established a first innings lead of 85, the Scots quickly pressed home their advantage by capturing early wickets and the hosts closed on 123-6 – a lead of just 38 going into the final day.
