Division Four of the World Cricket League continued in Los Angeles on Wednesday, with Italy's run without a win continuing and their relegation to Division Five confirmed. Meanwhile, Denmark remained in promotion contention with a win over the hosts.
At Wong Field, Italy were batting first after winning the toss, and soon found themselves on the back foot with the first three wickets down with the score on two. A recovery was initially led by Alessandro Bonora and Damian Crowley, who put on 40 for the fourth wicket.
Upon Bonora's dismissal, Carl Sandri joined Crowley, and the two most accomplished members of the Italian team were able to put on 74 for the fifth wicket before Crowley was out for 54. Sandri reached 40 before he was out, and an unbeaten 51 from 41 balls by Fida Hussain enable Italy to post 205-9 from their 50 overs.
Oman's reply started badly as they lost Zeeshan Maqsood for a duck from the second ball of their innings. But they never really struggled at all from then on. Zeeshan Siddiqui top scored with an unbeaten 54 as Oman chased down the target in 40.3 overs to win by five wickets and send Italy down to WCL Division Five.
Over at Severn Field, Denmark captain Michael Pedersen won the toss and put the USA into bat. Centurion on Tuesday Steven Taylor was dismissed early, but the home side kept themselves together, scoring steadily and keeping wickets intact.
Scoring began to pick up with a fifth wicket partnership of 52 between Akeem Dodson and Nicholas Standford. When Dodson fell for 34, Standford was joined by Timroy Allen, and the pair put on 77 for the sixth wicket before Standford was out for 59.
Allen and Elmore Hutchinson then put on 36 for the seventh wicket, before Aftab Ahmed took three wickets in four balls to see the USA score 261-9 from their 50 overs. Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with 4-58, whilst Timroy Allen finished the innings unbeaten on 53.
Denmark's reply was built around a partnership of 155 for the third wicket between Freddie Klokker and Zameer Khan. The partnership ended when Klokker was bowled by Ali Khan to leave Denmark needing 42 from the last ten overs.
Zameer Khan ensured that was no problem, finishing the innings unbeaten on 97 as Denmark completed a four wicket win to give themselves a chance at promotion.
Thursday is a rest day in Los Angeles, and promotion and relegation places will be confirmed on Friday. Denmark play Oman with the winners securing promotion. The net run rate situation is such that the USA should be safely promoted even if they lose to Jersey. Jersey need to win that game, hope Bermuda lose to Italy and the net run rate calculations work in their favour if they are to avoid another relegation from Division Four.
