JERSEY'S World Cricket League campaign got off to a losing start after they were well beaten by Oman in the opening fixture in Los Angeles.
Corey Bisson and Tony Hawkins-Kay looked to have given the Channel Islanders a real chance as their unbroken 6th wicket stand of 104 in just 92 balls took their side from a precarious 99 for 5 to a final total of 203 for 5.
However, the total proved woefully inadequate as Oman's batsmen shared a succession of partnerships to cruise home by six wickets - Swapnil Khadye anchoring the innings with a Man of the Match unbeaten 79.
Arun Poulose (35) and Zeeshan Maqsood (26) shared an opening stand of 55, and then Khadye had stand of 54 for the 3rd with Zeeshan Siddique (33) and an undefeated 51 for the 5th with Ajay Lalcheta (19*).
The Jersey attack clearly missed their talismanic left-arm spinner Ben Stevens, with Rhys Palmer (2-47) their most successful bowler.
Jersey had struggled batting first with Luke Gallichan (43 from 92 balls) and skipper Peter Gough (29 from 71) adopting a safety first approach against a dogged and accurate Omani bowling unit.
When 85 for 2 became 99 for 5, Jersey looked in serious trouble before the enterprising Hawkins-Kay and Bisson went on the offensive. Hawkins-Kay struck seven boundaries in his 48 not out from just 40 balls, while Bisson found the ropes four times in his unbeaten 54 from just 53 deliveries.
Jersey have a chance to bounce back today (SUN) when they take on fellow European side Denmark.
