Jersey have beaten their old rivals Guernsey by seven wickets at a sunny Farmers Field today.
Jersey captain Peter Gough won the toss and didn't hesitate to chose to bowl first, perhaps expecting the pitch to do a bit early on. But the home team's bowlers were unsuccessful at first, with Guernsey openers GH Smith and Matt Stokes putting on 58 before Smit holed out to Nat Watkins.
Number 3 batsman Ollie Newey followed soon afterwards as the Jersey spinners got on top of things. The fourth wicket fell in the 25th over with the score on 97, and two more wickets followed in the next over as Guernsey found themselves on the back foot on 97-6.
A recovery of sorts saw Thomas Kirk and David Hooper put on 32 for the seventh wicket, but another mini-collapse saw Guernsey lose their last four wickets for 20 runs as they were bowled out for 149. Nat Wakins was the pick of the Jersey bowlers with 3-29, whilst Rob McBey also chipped in with three wickets.
Jersey got Guernsey out quickly enough that they had to face a potentially tricky pre-lunch session of 8 overs. And tricky it was as Jamie Nussbaumer bowled Nat Watkins in the fourth over. Jersey only managed to score 16 from the 8 overs before lunch, and continued to score slowly after the resumption, at least initially.
Gough fell for 20 in the 16th over, at which point Jersey had scored just 33 due to some tight bowling from Jamie Nussbaumer - who went for just six runs in his seven overs - and David Hooper. But Jonty Jenner joining Ben Stevens at the crease saw Jersey begin to take the game away from their rivals.
The pair put on 88 together before Jenner lofted a ball to Luke Ferbrache at long-on, but no more wickets were lost as Jersey completed a seven wicket win. Ben Stevens put in another man of the match performance, top scoring with an unbeaten 67.
In other matches today, Vanuatu comprehensively beat Nigeria by 110 runs, whilst Oman had another big win, bowling Tanzania out for 94 with Aamir Kaleem taking 5-23. They then knocked off the runs in 17.3 overs to win by 9 wickets.
The results mean that should Jersey beat Nigeria on Friday and Oman beat Guernsey, then Oman and Jersey get promoted to Division 4. If both Jersey and Guernsey win, then net run rate will decide promotion spots between Jersey, Guernsey and Oman. Should Guernsey win and Jersey lose, Oman and Guernsey are promoted. If both Jersey and Guernsey lose, Oman are promoted, and it is net run rate to decide which of Jersey and Guernsey join them.
