Jersey have bounced back from defeat to Oman yesterday with a win over Tanzania at FB Fields today.
In the best weather of the tournament so far, Jersey captain Peter Gough won the toss and didn't hesitate to bat first. They found runs a lot easier to come by than against Oman, with Gough and Watkins putting on 87 for the opening wicket. That partnership ended when Gough edged a delivery to the keeper on 47, and Watkins followed him shortly after.
This brought Ben Stevens to the crease, and he dominated the rest of the innings. He had substantial partnerships with Jonty Jenner, Cornelious Bodenstein and Corey Bisson as he hit an unbeaten 103 from 88 balls. He helped Jersey post 273-5 from their 50 overs, the highest score of the tournament so far.
Faced with a tricky target, Tanzania got nowhere near the target, though they did manage to bat out their overs. There were some bright spots, with Kassimu Nossaro and Shaheed Dhanani both scoring 42. A cameo from Arun Dagar, who clubbed 34 from 23 balls, including a huge six that cleared a 12 foot fence over the straight boundary, provided some late entertainment.
It was too much for Tanzania though, and they were kept to 188-8 from their 50 overs, losing by 85 runs. Ben Kynman and Charles Perchard both took two wickets, with Perchard also recording a smart run out.
Jersey dropped a few catches though during their innings, which enabled Tanzania to bat out their overs. With Guernsey thumping Nigeria and Oman comprehensively beating Vanuatu today, Jersey's net run rate may have not got the boost it otherwise could have. With NRR looking to be crucial in deciding the promotion spots at the end of the week, the inability to deal a killer blow could come back to haunt the hosts.
In the other matches of the day, Guernsey beat Nigeria by 10 wickets, whilst Oman beat Vanuatu thanks to a fine unbeaten century by Zeeshan Maqsood, who scored 130 from 138 balls to help complete a nine wicket win.
Jersey will play their old rivals Guernsey tomorrow and will likely need a win to stay in contention for promotion. CricketEurope will again have live ball by ball coverage of that match.
