Oman and Jersey returned to Grainville today to replay their Saturday match that was curtailed by rain. It turned out to not be a successful return for the home side as they collapsed to lose by 58 runs.
Jersey captain Peter Gough won the toss and unsurprisingly chose to bowl first on a pitch that had a decidedly greenish tinge to it. There was an incident in the warm up where Rhys Palmer managed to injure himself. Jersey requested that the Oman captain allow a replacement to be made, but skipper Ajay Lalcheta, as is his right, opted not to allow one.
Jersey had some early success as Khawar Ali was caught behind in the third over before Zeeshan Maqsood and Noorul Riaz put on 43 for the second wicket. Once Riaz was out for 14, Maqsood was able to put together a 78 run partnership for the third wicket with Jatinder Singh, who eventually got out for 40. Maqsood edged to the keeper soon afterwards for 69 as Oman lost four wickets for 17 runs in their middle order.
A lower order recovery of sorts, with Rajesh Ranpura and Swapnil Khadye both hitting huge sixes, helped Oman post 205-9 from their 50 overs. Anthony Hawkins-Kay, Nat Watkins and Ben Stevens all took two wickets for the home side.
Jersey's reply started slowly but steadily as Gough and Watkins scored 17 and 15 respectively. Gough's dismissal sparked a mini collapse as they lost three wickets for four runs in what was a trailer for what was to come later. Before the denouement though, Jonty Jenner and Anthony Hawkins-Kay put on 39 for the fifth wicket before Jenner fell to what was an excellent caught and bowled by Aamir Kaleem, catching a ball hit low and hard straight down the pitch.
Hawkins-Kay and Luke Gallichan then looked to be swinging the game back Jersey's way with a 61 run partnership. But they reckoned without Munis Ansari finding his length. He yorked three batsmen as Jersey collapsed again, losing their last five wickets for just eight runs.
Ansari finished with figures of 5-28 as Jersey were bowled out for 147 and lost by 58 runs. They will play Nigeria tomorrow at FB Fields.
