Jersey have recorded their first win of World Cricket League Division Five after beating Vanuatu today at Grainville.
After rain delayed the start of the game, it was reduced to a 37 over contest, with Vanuatu captain Andrew Mansale choosing to bowl first after winning the toss. Peter Gough and Nat Watkins got the Jersey innings off to a good start with a 49 run opening partnership, which ended when Gough was bowled by Nalin Nipiko.
Watkins then put on another 48 with Ben Stevens and 46 with Jonty Jenner as Jersey got on top of the Vanuatu bowling attack. Mansale managed to peg them back a bit, eventually finishing with 4 wickets, whilst Watkins scored 65 before he got a thick edge to Simpson Obed at point.
The final Jersey total was 200-9 from their 37 overs, setting Vanuatu a stiff challenge.
They lost Jonathan Dunn and Patrick Matautaava early on in their innings before Joshua Rasu and Andrew Mansale were able to put on 64 for the third wicket, but without scoring quickly enough to worry the home side too much.
The way Rasu was swinging wildly at almost every shot, it was only a matter of time before he missed one as was bowled by Nat Watkins from the first ball of the 21st over. The collapse then came, with Vanuatu losing eight wickets in 10 overs for just 21 runs. Watkins completed a fine all-round performance with 3-23, whilst Ben Kynman also took three wickets.
Jersey will now play Oman tomorrow in a replay of their abandoned game yesterday, with both teams looking to make it two from two.
Oman had a relatively easy win today, scoring 220-6 against Nigeria, with Aamir Kaleem scoring an unbeaten 78. Rajesh Ranpura and Ajay Lalcheta then both took four wickets as Nigeria were bundled out for 39, losing by 181 runs at FB Fields. Over at Farmers Field, Guernsey bowled Tanzania out for 108 before knocking off the required runs in 26.1 overs to win by 8 wickets.
