Scotland's spinning all-rounder Michael Leask has been given a boost ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The 25 year-old has been signed by Somerset and although he is expected to mainly feature in second XI cricket for the English county, Matthew Maynard - their Director of Cricket - hasn't ruled out promotion to the first team.

Speaking on the club website Maynard said: "He's a good little cricketer - feisty and quite a strong character.

"It will be interesting to see if he can put pressure on the first-team bowlers this year, because I primarily see this year as a learning curve for him in the second XI, but the opportunity is there."

Leask has previous experience of county cricket, but played just the one game for Northants, back in 2014.

He has played 39 matches in all forms of cricket for Scotland, scoring 424 runs at 14.62, and taking 24 wickets at 26.75.

He is a powerful striker of the ball, and his ability to clear the boundaries make him a useful asset for any side.
