One team was going to reach their first ever major global event semi-final today as the Under-19 World Cup reached the quarter final stage in Mirpur. It wasn't to be the turn of associates Nepal as they were beaten by hosts Bangladesh.
Nepal batted first after winning the toss, and scored slowly in the early part of their innings. Sunil Dhamala and Raju Rijal put on 44 for the third wicket before the former was run out for 25. Rijal was run out too, but not before he'd top scored with 72 from 80 balls.
Nepal managed to bat out their overs, reaching 211-9. Mohammad Saifuddin was the pick of the home team's bowlers with 2-38.
The Bangladesh run chase started slowly, with Aarif Sheikh going for just nine runs from five overs as he opened the bowling. A partnership between Pinak Ghosh and Joyraz Sheikh was looking like providing a solid base for the hosts, but a mix up led to the partnership ending at 46 when Ghosh was rather comically run out.
With Bangladesh on 98 when the fourth wicket fell in the 29th over, Nepal were in with a chance of securing another famous win at the Under-19 World Cup. It wasn't to be though as Zakir Hasan and Mehdi Hasan put on an unbroken 117 for the fifth wicket.
Surprisingly Aarif Sheikh wasn't brought back into the attack after this economical opening spell, with the six wicket win coming with 10 balls to spare once the batsmen began hitting out.
The tournament isn't over for Nepal though as they will play the fifth place semi-final on Wednesday against the loser of Monday's Pakistan v West Indies quarter final. Bangladesh will play the winner of that match in their tournament semi-final on Thursday.
