It's been eight years since the last one, but Nepal returned to their habit of wins over full members in Under-19 World Cups today as they beat New Zealand by 32 runs in Fatullah.
Nepal were put into bat after New Zealand skipper Josh Finnie won the toss, and initially scored slowly, only bring up their 100 at the halfway stage. Sandeep Sunar held the innings together early on, scoring 39 before he was bowled by Rachin Ravindra.
The middle order upped the scoring rate for the Nepalese, with captain Raju Rijal top scoring with 48. Aarif Sheikh scored 39, whilst Kushal Bhurtel hit a quick fire 35 from 23 balls to take the final Nepal score to 238-7. Nathan Smith was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with 3-58.
At 103-2 shortly after the halfway stage of their reply, New Zealand were looking well set for a win. The wicket of Glenn Phillips for 52 was the first of three wickets for 7 runs over the next five overs. New Zealand then were looking like getting their chase back on track.
But Nepal's bowlers were able to keep on top of the New Zealand batsmen, with the eighth wicket falling with the score on 202 in the 47th over. Only four more runs were scored before the final wicket fell, Nepal completing their seventh win over a full member in the Under-19 World Cup, and second over New Zealand.
Nepal will look to continue their winning ways when both of these teams are next in action on Saturday. Nepal will be playing fellow associates Ireland, whilst New Zealand will play India.
