SKIPPER Abbi Aitken made her 100th appearance for Scotland in a six-wicket victory over Thailand in Bangkok that set up a mouth-watering do-or-die play-off with Ireland for a place at next year's World T20 finals in India.
Aitken was unable to celebrate her landmark with a wicket but did hold a stunning catch that will be a candidate for Champagne Moment of the women's qualifiers as the hosts were bundled out for only 74 at Thailand Cricket Ground.
Rachel Scholes, who has played indoor cricket for England, was the pick of the Scotland bowlers, taking 1-7 from four overs while player/coach Kari Anderson and Kirstie Gordon both picked up two wickets as the Thai batters struggled against spin.
Scholes then eased to a top score of 32 as Scotland knocked off their target with a bit more to spare than 10 balls would suggest. The victory earned second place in Group A behind tournament favourites Bangladesh, and a play-off chance against Group B winners Ireland.
"Rachel set the tone for the chase; she didn't panic, she looked cool," Aitken said. "We talked about taking the singles and that's what we did and it's fantastic to reach the semi-finals after a lot of hard work over the last week and in the practice games.
"There's been a lot of attention on me going into this match. Of course it's great to win 100 caps - only two other people have done that - but today was really all about the team and achieving our goal of progressing from the group.
"Who knows what we can do from here? The game against Ireland will be the biggest in the history of Scottish women's cricket because we've never been to a world finals of any sort. If we bat and bowl like we did today, you never know what can happen."
