Hosts Thailand had a tough ask in their opening match at the Women's World Twenty20 Qualifier, coming up against the top ranked team in the tournament in the shape of Bangladesh. And it proved to be just as tough as expected as they crashed to a heavy defeat against the full member side.
The home team's captain Somnarin Tippoch won the toss and chose to put Bangladesh in to bat. Runs weren't exactly coming quickly as the visitors opening partnership of Ayasha Rahman and Sharmin Akhter put on 38 before the latter was out in the seventh over. Rahman was the next wicket to fall, having reached 30.
Fargana Hoque gave a little impetus to the innings towards the end, scoring an unbeaten 23 from 21 balls to help take Bangladesh to 105-6 from their 20 overs. Suleeporn Laomi was the pick of the Thai bowlers with 2-17, whilst Nattaya Boochatham also took two wickets.
The reply for the home side didn't start well when opener Sirintra Saengsakaorat was out lbw for a golden duck during the first over. Things didn't really get better as Thailand struggled throughout their innings. The only double figure score of the innings from Chanida Sutthiruang took them to 31-5 in the 13th over.
From that point Thailand collapsed and were bowled out for 32, losing five wickets for just one run in two overs. No one bowler stood out for Bangladesh as they used seven of them, Rumana Ahmed, Fahima Khan and Ritu Moni all taking two wickets.
Bangladesh will play Scotland tomorrow, whilst Thailand will hope to pick themselves up with a match against Papua New Guinea.
