A fine all round performance from Suriname's Gavin Singh has helped his team secure the 2015 WCL Division Six title with a 6 wicket win over Guernsey.
Suriname captain Mohindra Boodram won the toss at the County Ground in Essex and chose to field first. Guernsey's innings started steadily, with Matthew Stokes and Oliver Nightingale putting on 68 for the first wicket. Stokes was the first man out for 33 in the 16th over, but Nightingale stayed in for another 20 overs.
Runs weren't exactly flowing from the bat though, as when Nightingale was out for 59 in the 36th over, Guernsey were on 139-4, scoring at less than four runs an over. Oliver's brother Tom was the top scorer of the Guernsey innings though, scoring 65 before he was bowled by Gavin Singh.
Singh bowled well to finish with 5-42 from his ten overs, helping to bowl Guernsey out for 237. A low score perhaps, but Guernsey had successfully defended 239 against the South American side on Thursday, so they would perhaps have been confident of doing so again.
And with Shazam Ramjohn out caught behind in the first over, Suriname had a less than ideal start to their reply. Muneshwar Patandin and Wasim Akram scored 31 and 26 respectively to take Suriname to 71-3, getting them ahead of the required rate.
Mohindra Boodram and Gavin Singh then proceeded to take the game away from Guernsey with a 122 run partnership for the fourth wicket which ended when Boodram was out for 65. Sauid Drepaul then contributed a 30 to an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 44 as Suriname completed a six wicket win.
Disappointment for Guernsey then, but the main aim of the tournament was to secure promotion to Division Five. It was recently announced that their old rivals Jersey were putting in a bid to host that event in spring next year, so Guernsey may have familiar conditions then.
