Spearheaded by a five-wicket haul from medium-pacer Muneshwar Patandin, Suriname beat Vanuatu by four wickets to move into Sunday's final, and at the same time secured their promotion to Division 5.

Patandin came into the attack with Vanuatu well placed on 100 for four after 25 overs, and seemingly on course for a total well in excess of 200.

Joshua Rasu had again given the Pacific islanders a great start with a 16-ball knock of 34, hitting five fours and two sixes, and with skipper Andrew Mansale and keeper Trevor Langa, the mainstays of the middle order, at the crease together, Vanuatu appeared to have built a good platform.

But Patandin removed first Langa and then Mansale, who had compiled 34 from 82 deliveries, and as he proceeded to run through the tail the innings subsided in the space of 18 overs to a disappointing 140 all out.

Suriname lost Shazam Ramjohn in the first over of their reply but Patandin, who had followed up his performance with the ball by opening the batting, added 50 for the second wicket in company with Wasim Haslim (31).

When they both departed within four overs of one another the match briefly swung back in Vanuatu's favour, but captain Mohindra Boodram and Sauid Drepaul, who like Patandin and several other members of the squad hail from Suriname's neighbour Guyana, took their side to the brink of victory with a fourth-wicket stand of 75.

Only four were needed when Nalin Nipiko finally removed Boodram for a patient 43, and in the next over Patrick Matautaava struck twice, bowling Drepaul for 28 and then adding the scalp of Arun Gokoel.

But it was too little too late, and three balls later the Surinamese reached their target with 21 deliveries to spare.
