Hong Kong have either played very well or quite poorly throughout this tournament. Today it was the latter as they were easily beaten by a well rested Scottish side who hadn't played for a week.
Scotland skipper Preston Mommsen won the toss and didn't hesitate to put his opponents in on a ground that has very much favoured the teams chasing during the tournament. His decision was vindicated when Jamie Atkinson was out almost straight away. Josh Davey bowled the second over and went for 15, but the Hong Kong innings never really got going after that.
Mark Chapman and Aizaz Khan had useful cameos, scoring 24 from 23 and 31 from 21 respectively, but nobody was really able to help them build a partnership. The final Hong Kong total was 116, with Ali Evans and Josh Davey both taking 3-17. Safyaan Sharif also chipped in as Hong Kong struggled against the pace bowlers, taking 3-29.
Scotland came out firing, with Coetzer not wanting to waste any time. He scored 16 from the first over, but Hong Kong hit back when Calum MacLeod was bowled for a duck by Haseeb Amjad in the second over. This brought wicketkeeper Cross to the crease, and he and Coetzer set about the Hong Kong bowlers with some style.
The pair put on 52 in just four overs as Scotland scored more than half the required runs before they'd even got out of the powerplay. Cross was the first of the pair to fall, cutting it to Nadeem Ahmed at point having scored 39 from just 15 balls. Coetzer was out in the next over for 33 from 19 balls.
There was bit of a lull in the Scottish innings after those two dismissals, but Coetzer and Cross had given them a platform that enabled them to cruise towards victory. Two more wickets were lost before the five wicket win was completed in the 13th over. George Munsey guided the team home with 25 from 19 balls.
Scotland will now play in tomorrow's final, with memories no doubt going back to 10 years ago when they won the ICC Trophy final in Dublin. Hong Kong can get a consolation win when they play the 3rd place play-off tomorrow morning.
