Co-hosts Scotland have ended the televised stages in Edinburgh with a defeat to Afghanistan, who are now top of Group B with three wins from three matches.
Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai won the toss and chose to bat first, and Scotland drew first blood when Nawroz Mangal was trapped lbw from the first ball he faced in the first over. Mohammad Shahzad and the skipper weren't set back by that early dismissal as they proceeded to score rapidly.
Shahzad was the main man in the partnership, smashing an excellent 75 from 36 balls including seven sixes, three of which went completely out of the ground. He was eventually out in the 12th over, sharing in a 110 run partnership for the second wicket with Stanikzai.
Stanikzai scored 34 of his own before he was run out, whilst Najibullah Zadran - with 37 from 21 balls - and Mohammad Nabi - with 33 not out from 18 balls - put on 66 for the fifth wicket. The final Afghan total was a formidable 210-5.
In reply, Scotland threatened in parts but were never really in the hunt. Cross impressed with 37 from 22 balls, whilst Mommsen continued his good form with 44 from 20 balls.
By the time Hamid Hassan bowled two batsmen in the penultimate over, it was already too late for the Scots. They were bowled out four balls from the end of their innings for 173, losing by 37 runs.
Scotland have tomorrow off before taking on Kenya at the same venue on Tuesday. Afghanistan travel to Stirling tomorrow where they will also play Kenya.
