Ireland's U19 World Cup qualifying campaign got off to a perfect start as they thumped hosts Jersey by six wickets, chasing down a modest 171 to win with nearly 20 overs in hand.

The run chase was given the perfect platform by the opening duo of William McClintock and Sonny Cott, who both scored half centuries as the Irish knocked off the target with little difficulty.

Donemana's McClintock raced to his fifty in just 36 balls (6 fours, 1 six) as he and Pembroke's Cott added 81 in 63 balls.

Cott was slightly more circumspect than his opening partener, but still scored at a healthy rate of knots - making 51 in 59 balls (6 fours).

Jersey's Harrison Carylon slowed the progress taking 2 for 18, but Adam Dennison's unbeaten 23, coupled with double figures contributions from skipper Jack Tector (13) and McClintock's twin brother Gary (12) ensured the win.

Earlier Phoenix spinner Ben White - a late addition to the touring squad - ensured the selectors fully justified his call-up by taking 3 for 33 on the spin friendly pitch.

Gary McClintock (2-21) proved a real handful bowling tightly and with no little hostility, while Merrion left-armer Tom Stanton also featured prominently taking 2 for 29.

A special word of praise for Pembroke wicket-keeper Lorcan Tucker who had five dismissals in the game - three stumpings and two catches.

Robert Duckett (45*), Ben Ward (33) and Solomon Warner were the pick of the Jersey batsmen.

Ireland top the table but only just, as Scotland were convincing 99 run winners over The Netherlands.

The Irish face the Dutch tomorrow (SUN) at Les Quennevais.
