Given how far Afghanistan have come in recent years, it's easy to forget that not so long ago these two teams started the World Cricket League in the same division. Back on Jersey's home turf in 2008, the sides played each other in the division five final and were both promoted to division four.
Since then Jersey have tended to bounce between divisions 4, 5 and 6 of the World Cricket League, whilst Afghanistan have gone on to play in World Twenty20s and World Cups and get wins over full members in ODIs. For Jersey meanwhile, this upcoming tournament is the first time they've played at this level, and the gulf in class that's opened up in the last seven years was painfully obvious.
Jersey captain Peter Gough won the toss and chose to bat first, but Gough calling correctly was pretty much the only thing that went right for the Channel Islanders in the match. Gough and Cornelius Bodenstein both scored 12, but no other Jersey batsmen reached double figures as they were bundled out for just 48.
Afghanistan lost two wickets in reply but predictably had no trouble chasing down that low target, doing so in 7.3 overs to win by 8 wickets. The whole match lasted 19.5 overs.
Jersey will look to bounce back in their next warm-up match against tournament co-hosts Scotland at Goldenacre tomorrow morning. Afghanistan will travel to Stirling to take on Hong Kong in their second warm-up match tomorrow afternoon.
