Division One of the European Championship looks set for an exciting finish on Wednesday morning with Italy, Jersey, Denmark and Guernsey all having won 3 of their 4 games so far.
Hosts Jersey batted first in their match against France at Grainville, but their top four batsmen failed to give them a good start as they contributed 37 between them. It was instead left to the middle order, which was led by Ben Stevens scoring 34 from 27 balls. Usman Khan took three wickets for France as Jersey scored 144-8 from their 20 overs.
The French upper order also failed, before middle order batsmen rescued their innings. Hamza Niaz and Williamdeep Singh both scored 38 - the former remaining unbeaten. They scored too slowly though and were restricted to 125-6 from their 20 overs, losing by 19 runs.
FB Fields saw an all Scandinavian clash as Norway batted first after winning the toss against Denmark. The Norwegians put in their best batting performance in the tournament so far, reaching 139-9 from their 20 overs. Mofassar Saeed top scored with an unbeaten 32 whilst Basit Javed was the pick of the bowlers with 3-21.
Had it not been for Freddie Klokker, that score would have likely been enough for Norway. The Danish wicket-keeper scored 82 from 59 balls in the Denmark innings, with the next highest score being 11. Denmark lost seven wickets in reply and only hit the winning runs with two balls to spare to win by 3 wickets.
Meanwhile over at Farmers Field the unbeaten Guernsey batted first against Italy after captain Jamie Nussbaumer won the toss. Guernsey lost Tom Kimber early on and for the most part found the going tough against the experienced Italian bowling attack.
Rizwan Tanweer bowled particularly well for the Italians, taking 4-10 as Guernsey were bowled out for 122. Matthew Stokes top scored for them with 30.
Italy again got off to a quick reply, with Peter Petricola contributing 33 to a 39 run opening partnership with ANdy Northcote. Northcote went on to top score with 39 before he was the third man out. Italy completed a five wicket win in the 18th over to ensure that they go into the final day on top of the table on net run rate.
After tomorrow's rest day, we'll get to the business end of the tournament on Wednesday. Italy will play Denmark and Guernsey will take on Jersey with the winners then looking at the net run rate situation to decide which team wins the tournament and qualifies for the global qualifier in July. France and Norway - both winless so far - will also play with the losers relegated to Division Two.
