The two Channel Island sides, Jersey and Guernsey, have both made it two wins from two in Division One of the European Championship after beating Italy and Norway respectively this afternoon.
Hosts Jersey came up against Italy - the team that beat them in the semi-final in 2013 - at Farmers Field, with Italy winning the toss and electing to bat first. Dinidu Marage was dismissed for just five in the second over, before Peter Petricola and Damian Crowley put on 109 for the second wicket.
That partnership ended when Petricola was out for 54, whilst Crowley also scored 54, batting until the end of the innings to finish not out. Italy scored 155-4 from their 20 overs.
Jersey's reply started similarly to the Italian one, with Peter Gough getting out for four in the first over. Ed Farley and Jonty Jenner then put on 70 for the second wicket, with Jenner the second man out having scored 39 from 22 balls. Farley also scored 39 before he was out.
Ben Stevens hit 29 from just 18 balls late in the Jersey innings, helping them complete a four wicket win with one ball to spare.
Jersey's old rivals Guernsey took on Norway in their match at Grainville, with Norway choosing to field first after winning the toss, a somewhat surprising decision given that they conceded over 200 against Jersey in the morning.
Guernsey didn't score 200, but they still put together a decent score. Tom Kimber was the top scorer for them, reaching 87 from 61 balls before he was the fourth man out in the 16th over with the score on 126. His team scored 46 from the final four overs to take them to 172-8.
Norway's reply had two highlights. Ehtsham Ul-Haq scored his second fifty of the day with 54, whilst Shabaz Butt scored an unbeaten 46. Norway were kept to 149-6 from their 20 overs, losing by 23 runs.
The other match of the afternoon saw France win the toss and elect to bat first against Denmark at FB Fields. There was no 100 run opening partnership like in their morning game against Italy this time, and they were only able to score 117-7 from their 20 overs, Usman Khan top scoring with 37 before he was one of five batsmen in the French innings to be run out.
Denmark had little trouble in reply, with Zahmeer Khan and Aftab Ahmed putting on 78 for the first wicket, Ahmed scoring 54 from just 28 balls. Denmark completed an eight wicket win in just 12.5 overs.
So Jersey and Guernsey end day one with unbeaten records, though Jersey's hammering of Norway this morning means that they're well out in front on net run rate. Tomorrow will be a rest day, but the tournament will resume on Monday.
