The Singapore Cricket Association has announced that Trevor Chappell will be its coach for the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 6 this month.
His side, who as hosts of the tournament will be one of the favourites for the event, arrived in the country at the weekend and will have a month with the team to help it try and qualify for Division 5 in Nepal next year.
'There is plenty to be happy about,'' said Chappell, in an interview with the Singapore Cricket Association website, as he observed a trial match. 'There is plenty of talent. Obviously, there are areas we can improve.''
Chappell, younger brother of Ian and Greg, played three Test Matches for Australia, in the 1981 Ashes series in England, as well as 20 ODIs, and has experience as national coach of Bangladesh and the fielding coach for Sri Lanka.
'We are in Division 6 and need to be among the top 2 to make it to the next higher division,'' added SCA Deputy President, Mahmood Gaznavi Gaznavi. 'In terms of ability, it is my firm belief that we have the quality to make a big impression in this tournament.'
'There is much work that needs to be done,' added Gaznavi. 'Players have to seize this opportunity and lift their approach at practices to be ready in all aspects for the WCL Division 6.'
