Mat Hague believes that Jersey cricket has a bright future after Ben Stevens took four wickets to help his side secure a 79-run win over Fiji.
Hague paid tribute to his young spinner after her captured figures of 4-46 to help Jersey win its first game at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 4.
'He did well and came on at a difficult time and got a couple of wickets early on and ended up with four in the end,' said Hague. 'At sixteen years of age it is a fantastic achievement and he's got a bright future.'
With the emergence of the likes of Stevens, Hague is hopeful Jersey can remain competitive at this level of cricket and go from strength to strength.
'This was a chance to go up to the next division, but there are a lot of ICC tournaments coming up and there are lots of tournaments for the youngsters like Ben Stevens, Anthony Kay and Sam Dewhurst – they are all promising young players,' he added.
Hague believed that the win was partly inspired by some of the late order resistance it showed against Italy on Tuesday.
'I think we've been playing some good cricket in the field – it's been the batting that has let us down,' said Hague.
'Yesterday, although we lost a lot of wickets early on, we fought a bit and got a few runs at the end and that's given us a boost.
'As we've had such a poor start to the tournament we wanted to all gel together and prove a few people wrong.'
