Tanzania skipper Hamisi Abdallah was a happy man after putting in a match-winning performance in his side's opening day victory at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 4, as Afghanistan and Hong Kong also registered wins in Dar Es Salaam.

Abdallah was named player of the match as Tanzania defeated Jersey by 34 runs, while Afghanistan triumphed over Fiji by 81 runs (D/L method) and Hong Kong beat Italy by 44 runs (D/L method).

Despite making just 142 all out with the bat, after a below-par batting performance which saw it collapse from 85-2 to 119-9, with Shaheed Dhananib (32) the top scorer, Tanzania showed great character to win a tense and exciting encounter.

Indeed the home side was grateful for the contribution of Abdullah (31) and Riziki Kiseto (eight not out), who put on an invaluable stand of 27 in between the rain breaks to take Tanzania to a defendable total.

Jersey made a solid start, but was undone by some disappointing shot making on a slow batting surface as they struggled to come to terms with a potent spin attack.

Despite having been 69-2, a disappointing shot from skipper Mat Hague sparked a middle-order collapse, losing four wickets for just eight runs, which set it on the way to a disappointing defeat.

'Everybody worked hard and my team gave me the support that I asked of them,' said Abdallah.

'It is our first game and there are so many games in this tournament we just need to keep playing well. We tried to bowl to our field and at the stumps. The spinners did a wonderful job.'

Afghanistan got off to a winning start in the competition, with its bowling line-up once again saving the team after a poor performance with the bat against Fiji.

Batting first in a rain-affected match that had been reduced to 40 overs per side, it managed to last only 35.3 overs as it made 132 all out, with Iniasi Cakacaka (4-26) and Waisake Tukaha (3-16) doing most of the damage for an excellent Fiji attack.

But Hamid Hassan (4-25) led a spirited Afghan bowling performance, as Fiji crumbled to 52 all out.

'At the start we had a problem as we only got 130 runs, but we always thought that would be enough runs,' said Hassan.

'As bowlers, you can't change the score so we just tried our best with the ball. And it paid off.'

Hong Kong recovered from a poor start against Italy to win the clash between two of the pre-tournament favourites.

In a game reduced to 41 overs per side, Hong Kong managed to overcome the loss of two early wickets to post an imposing score of 210-5, with Zain Abbas (70), Ilyas Gul (48) and Butt Hussain (44) all in excellent form.

Hong Kong then put in a good bowling and fielding display, to restrict Italy to 163-9, leaving coach Aftab Habib content with his side's start.

'It was a really good team performance,' said Habib, the former England batsman.

'We've got a lot of character and fight in our team and Zain Abbas played an exceptional innings today. There's still a lot more to work on in the rest of this tournament though.'

Hong Kong takes on hosts Tanzania tomorrow and Habib is looking forward to the challenge of playing the host country.

'Every game is an important one in this tournament as they are all World Cup qualifying games and if you want to be a top team you have to beat all the other sides. Tanzania is a dangerous team and we are looking forward to playing them.'

In the other games tomorrow, Italy takes on Fiji, while Afghanistan plays Jersey in a repeat of the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5.
