The weather brought frustration for both teams at College Field, where Saturday's big Group A match between the USA and Norway was abandoned after 21 overs had been bowled.
The Americans were well placed at 108 for one when the rain forced the players from the field, thanks to an unbroken stand of 98 between opener Sushil Nadkarni and captain Steve Massiah.
Their partnership had enabled their side to recover from the early loss of Orlando Baker, caught by Shahid Ahmed at point off Ahmed Bhatti's bowling with the total on 10, and they were looking in menacing form by the time the interruption came.
The quick breakthrough vindicated Shahid's decision to field after winning the toss, but Nadkarni never looked in any trouble, and although Massiah took 18 balls to get off the mark, when he did so it was with the first of a series of splendid drives which sped all the way to the boundary.
Gradually, the batsmen began to unleash a range of fine strokes, with Nadkarni pulling Majid Zia Butt for a massive square six, and then Massiah hitting Zeeshan Ali back over his head in the following over.
But that was almost the end of the action, and after three hours of steady rain the umpires concluded that the ground was too wet for any more play to be possible.
This means that the game will be replayed on Sunday, weather permitting; the venue for the replayed match will be Farmers Field.
