There was double cause for celebration for Ireland captain Greg Thompson after his side's win over Bermuda. Not only was his 5 for 26 enough to gain him the Man of the Match accolade, but his haul brought his tally in Under 19 World Cups to 27 wickets. That puts him in joint first position with Moses Henriques of Australia.
It was the Lisburn leg spinners second five wicket return in Under 19 World Cup cricket - he also took 5 against the West Indies on debut in Bangladesh in 2004.
Speaking after the game with Bermuda he said, "I enjoyed coming on to bowl today. Both Trott and Jones, who had given us such bother in the game before were well set. They were throwing the gauntlet down to us and setting us a real challenge. I relished that, and although it took me nearly two overs to settle, once I got Trott with a good 'leggie', I got into a good rhythm and settled."
"I haven't bowled that well in this tournament so far, but did okay against them in the last game. Hopefully I can carry this form into the Zimbabwe game, and onto the Senior Tour of the UAE and Bangladesh."
"Even when Malachi Jones was going well, I always felt we had enough runs on the board. No disrespect to the other Bermudian batsman, but once we got rid of Trott and Jones, we knew we had the game won. Having said that, he had got to 40 before we noticed, but myself and James Hall tightened it up, and the wickets followed."
"I set attacking fields, and although the boundaries came in a flurry, there were a few times where the ball just evaded fielders. It's maybe an area I need to look at for the Zimbabwe game."
Thompson will in that game have played 19 times in the World Cup - equal second behind Chaugai of Nepal who won 20 caps.
Interestingly enough, Eoin Morgan holds the record for most runs in Under 19 World Cup history - what a double that is for Irish cricket.
