AN undefeated half century by Tony Whiteman ensured a second victory of the week for Luxembourg and left Finland still looking for the first win with just two games remaining.

Luxembourg were always in control chasing down Finland’s 184 with Whiteman, coming to the middle at 45 for two seeing the job through with eight balls to spare. Anand Pattabiraman got the innings off in a hurry, scoring 33 in just 12 overs but when he was the first run-out victim in the match, Whiteman took over.

He hit just four boundaries in his innings of 58 but his 104 balls innings was just what was required. He was involved in three run outs but his sixth wicket partnership with Nishith Gandhi effectively won the match although it was wicket-keeper Graham Cope who was there at the finish.

Although Luxembourg lost six wickets winning the game the Finnish bowlers took only two of them, with Amrik Bhatia particularly impressive, finishing with one for 15 from his 10 overs.

Finland opener Michael Shaw gave his side the perfect start with 55 from 78 balls as they reached 105 for four in the 33rd over but three wickets then fell for 15 runs in just three overs and it needed an eighth wicket stand of 54 between Bilal Khan and Madhu Bhandari to give Luxembourg a meaningful target.

They failed to bat out their overs, Gandhi, who for the first time this week failed to wickets in his opening spell, returning to finish with three for 20.

The losers of Finland’s game against Slovenia on Saturday will be relegated to Division Five.
