LUXEMBOURG won only one game at the last European Division Four championships but they were off the mark on day one this year with a 99 runs success against Slovenia.
Although Philip Burleigh was run out in the first over without facing a ball, his opening partner, Timothy Andrews, made amends with a half century to set Luxembourg up for a total of 225.
Andrews received good support from Tony Whiteman and Romesh Paul, batting at No 9, who scored 37 off 39 balls with four fours, as many as the rest of his team-mates, apart from Andrews, could muster all together.
Slovenia captain Mark Oman’s main objective was to bat out the overs and in almost 44 overs of defiance he almost did it. He faced 127 balls in that time but scored only 38 runs, 22 of them from five boundaries. He failed to carry his bat, however, caught out with No 11 Urban Blaznik having faced just three balls.
With Slovenia not threatening their total, Luxembourg were able to bowl almost everyone, nine in total, but the least said about the bowling on either team the better. There were a total of 89 wides in the match, with Oman having to concede top score in the Slovenia innings to the 43 wide extras.
