Isle of Man defeats Portugal on day one

ICC/CricketEurope

On the top pitch at La Manga, the Isle of Man scored 112 off the last 16 overs to total 187 for eight and that proved 55 runs too many for Portugal.

Max Stokoe scored a patient 42 from 113 balls, with just one four to anchor the Man innings. The No 3 was sixth out with the total on 120 but the acceleration then began with Daniel Kniveton scoring a run-a-ball 23, Richard Kniveton matching him from just 14 balls and Arne Van den Berg trumping them both with 33 from 25, including three fours and the game’s only six.

Portugal started well enough, reaching 45 for two but then Van den Berg took over with the ball. He dismissed Nadeem Butt and Paulo Buccimazza in quick succession and added the wickets of Intesab Medhi, Siddaharth Hazare and Syed Bukhari to reduce the hosts’ neighbours to 78 for eight.

It was effectively game over at that stage and Van den Berg came out of the attack with five wickets for 23 from eight overs. Muhammad Mirza (18) and Humayun Shahzad (20) cashed in to finish as top scorers and compile the highest partnership of 37 but the end was not long delayed, bowled out for 122 in the 41st over.
