Rain spoils day two in Glasgow
ICC/CricketEurope
Day two of the European Under-19 Division One Championship was almost a complete washout, with play only in the Denmark v Ireland match.
There was drizzle all day at Hamilton Crescent, and eventually it eased off enough to start a 30 over match at 3.05pm. Ireland won the toss and chose to put Denmark in to bat.
Denmark's innings started off much better than on day one against Scotland, with Aftab Ahmed hitting the first six of the tournament in the second over. Ali Ahmed was caught at mid-off by Irish skipper Andrew Balbirnie in the third over, following which there was a second wicket partnership of 38 between Hamid Shah and Waqar Akhtar before Akhtar was second out with the score on 52 in the 15th over.
Five more overs went by with 16 more runs added to the total before the wheels began to come off the Danish innings in the 20th over as the Irish spinners took hold.
Yesterday's top scoring Lars Fleming Boldt was caught and bowled in the 20th over, and the Irish captain took two wickets in two balls in the 21st over. Hamid Shah was out stumped for 30 from the last ball of the 22nd over, at which point the umpires took the players off due to the consistent rain that was beginning to get heavier.
With the score on 75/6, play never got restarted and the game was eventually abandoned. The rain was much heavier at Greenock CC for the Scotland v Netherlands match, and there was no play at all in that match.
Scotland and Ireland will now meet in a deciding match at Ferguslie tomorrow, whilst the Netherlands will play Denmark at Glasgow Academicals.
