Kyle Coetzer (Captain)

From a family in which a number of sports have played a major part, Kyle also played a range of sports Ð including trials for the national U15 soccer side and Aberdeen F.C. Ð before cricket took over as his main love. This is his second youth World Cup, having played in the previous tournament in New Zealand. He has captained the Scotland junior sides from U15 level through to the current side. Kyle has recently returned from his second spell at the Western Province Academy in South Africa where, in 2002/03 when he acted as 12th man for Western Province. From the Stoneywood-Dyce club, which also provides Gordon Goudie to the squad, he has just finished his first season at the Durham County Cricket Club Academy, where he has played for the County 2nd XI and has impressed not only his coaches but also everyone associated with the club. His favourite player is Jacques Kallis (South Africa) because he likes the way Kallis plays.

Kasim Farid

Kasim was introduced to the game by his father who, along with his brothers who also played, have now retired from cricket. An occasional soccer player, Kasim was part of the U17 European Championship winning team in 2003. He has captained the Scotland at U13, U15 and U17 levels and is vice-captain of the squad. A member of the Cydesdale club, he is joined in the squad by team-mates Andrew Hislop and Ross Lyons. He views this competition as a further step in his cricket education and is determined to make the most of the opportunity. Kasim lists Brian Lara (West Indies) and Jonty Rhodes (South Africa) as his favourite cricketers because 'they are brilliant'.

Iain Brand

Ian began his cricket career on arriving in Aberdeen six years ago. While his parents played rugby and hockey, Ian's sporting activities were centred round swimming (for Northern Botswana), tennis (for Botswana) hockey, golf and rugby before his arrival in Scotland. It was in his first game of school cricket that he made such an impression he was immediately invited to join his current club, Stoneywood-Dyce, where captain Kyle Coetzer also learned his cricket. He has represented his club in senior cricket, in addition to playing representative cricket at both district and national levels at various age groups. Ian gained his ECB level 1 coaching certificate while attending the European Cricket Academy and enjoyed the experience of working with cricketers at the top level at the World Cup of 2003 in Cape Town, while a member of the Western Cape Cricket Academy. He considers himself to be an all-rounder and his favourite player is Jonty Rhodes (South Africa), because he is dedicated to the game and gives of his best at all times.

Rajeev Routray

While none of his family played cricket, his father introduced him to his local club at the age of 7 and he has been involved ever since. He also represents his school at rugby. Another member of the squad who has progressed from the U15 side to this World Cup squad, Rajeev aims to take full advantage of the opportunity this competition provides to make his own personal mark and to raise the profile of Scottish cricket. He is quick to acknowledge the support and guidance provided by his club, Ferguslie, and the national coaches at various age levels for helping him to progress to this level. Omer Hussain is a member of the same club. Due to the consistency of his performances, he lists Glenn McGrath (Australia) as his favourite player.

Craig Anderson
DOB: 09.09.1983

Craig had no family background in cricket and was introduced to the game at his primary school. It is the only sport in which he takes part and first represented Scotland at the age of 17. A member of the Arbroath United club, Craig has opened the bowling for youth teams ever since. He was a member of the U19 squad, which won the European Championships in 2002 and was part of the U19 squad, which qualified for this World Cup as runners up, in the same tournament in Holland in 2003. In 2003 Craig completed his best season at U19 level, with the best batting average and bowling figures of his career to date. This was recognized by his selection for the U23 squad, which won the European championship convincingly. He is another member of the squad whose top player is Glenn McGrath (Australia), again because of the consistently high level of his performances.

Robert Cannon

Robert moved to Scotland with my family at the age of one and first began playing cricket for his local team, Forfarshire, at the age of eight after encouragement by his father. While also playing rugby and football, he has since then he has represented Scotland at cricket at every possible age group, enjoying success - both personally and as a member of these teams. His greatest achievement to date was scoring a century for Scotland against Denmark at U13 level. This was my first ever century and to achieve that landmark while playing for his country was a moment he 'will always remember'. Three other centuries have followed to date, including another for Scotland. In addition, Robert has recorded a number of half centuries for his country - Ireland, England, Denmark and against various English counties feeling the weight of his run scoring. Ian Botham (England) is his top player and his inspiration.

Ian Young

Ian was introduced to the game by his father, a former player and now a coach and administrator. In addition to his cricket, Ian also plays golf and football, in addition to having represented Glasgow Schools at rugby. As a cricketer, he has represented his district at all age levels, and first played for the national U13 side at the age of 11. He has now repeated his district feat by appearing for Scotland at all age groups up to the U19. In 2002 Ian played in the winning U19 European championship side and in the same side, which qualified for this World Cup as runners up, in the 2003 European championships. Also in 2003 he enjoyed success with the bat in a trial with the MCC Young Cricketers and is a club-mate of Moneeb Iqbal. Thanks to his fielding, he regards Jonty Rhodes (South Africa) as his favourite player.

Omer Hussain

Omer became involved in the game through his family who all played, but perhaps his greatest influence was his cousin Majid Haq who he played with as a youngster and who played for Scotland at various age groups Ð and is a full international. Omer regards the two highlights of my cricketing career to date as winning the U19 2002 European championships for Scotland and qualifying for the 2004 World Cup in Bangladesh as runners up in the 2003 European U19 championship. He has already done some traveling on cricket business as part of the West District cricket squad that toured South Africa in 2002Ð which he described as 'an experience of a lifetime'. Omer is another member of the squad who recognizes the contribution to his development to date made by his club, Ferguslie, and various national coaches. He is a club-mate of fellow squad member Rajeev Routray and, as a left hand bat, lists Brian Lara (West Indies) as his favourite player.

Moneeb Iqbal

His interest in the game came through his father and uncles having encouraged him. Cricket is his only sport and, having represented his district and Scotland at younger age levels, Moneeb is an exciting prospect who played in the last Youth World Cup in New Zealand at the age of 15. Only four months later, a few weeks after his sixteenth birthday, he became the youngest player to represent Scotland in a full international in Scottish cricket history and also took part in a victory over Nottinghamshire on the test match ground at Trent Bridge. Moneeb is now a member of the Durham County Cricket Club Academy, along with the captain of the squad, Kyle Coetzer. He is still a member of the West of Scotland club where he is a team-mate of Ian Young. His favourite player is Shane Warne (Australia). Moneeb admires his dedication; his aggression and the interest he has created in the art of leg spin bowling.

Andrew Hislop
DOB: 30.05.1986

Andrew's father introduced him to the game, although there was no family history of involvement in the game. He has also represented his school at soccer. As a wicket keeper, Andrew acknowledges he has a major role to play in the squad and welcomes the opportunity to play at a high level anticipated during the competition. He is very much looking forward to Bangladesh 2004. He was a member of the 2003 European championship-winning U17 side and also took part in the U19 World Cup qualifying tournament from which Scotland finished qualified as runners-up. He feels very privileged to be part of the squad for the World Cup and acknowledges the assistance provided by the coaches at his club and the national coaches for their assistance and encouragement. Squad members Kasim Farid and Ross Lyons are team-mates at his club, Clydesdale. He respects the contribution made to his team's performances by his favourite player, and fellow wicket-keeper, Adam Gilchrist (Australia).

Allaudin Farooq

Ali was encouraged to take up the game by his uncles who still play. Apart from cricket, he plays both hockey and basketball. Ali represents George Heriots's FP which plays in the (senior) Scottish National Premiere League along with fellow squad member Sean Weeraratna. He has represented his district team (East District) in the Inter-District Championships at U15, U17 and U19 levels, matching his selection for the national sides at these age groups. He was a strike bowler for the Scotland U17 team who were European Champions in 2003 and played a major role in the U19 squads who were European Champions in 2001 and runners up in the 2003 European championships, which ensured qualification for this World Cup. Ali greatly admires the many achievements of Curtley Ambrose (West Indies) who is his favourite player.

Gordon Allan

Gordon became involved in the game through his father who played club cricket and is now an administrator. He also plays hockey and football. Gordon was captain of his club's youth teams between 1998 and 2000 and has represented his district at U13, U15, U17 and U19 levels. In 2003 he was part of his club's (Grange) Scottish National Cricket League senior title winning squad. He has taken over 200 wickets since he started playing in 1998 at the age of almost 13 years old. Because of his ability to move the ball at such great pace, Brett Lee (Australia) is Gordon's favourite player.

Ross Lyons

Ross became involved in the game thanks to his father who played club cricket. He also plays some football and golf. Ross is another member of the squad who has represented his country at all age levels, having experienced success with his club, Clydesdale, in numerous age group competitionsÐ along with fellow squad members Kasim Farid and Andrew Hislop. At club level he has been a regular member of the senior side for several years. He was an integral member of the national squad, which became European champions at U19 in 2002. Ross's favourite player is Lance Kluesner (South Africa) - because 'I bat like him!'

Gordon Goudie

With no history of family involvement in the game, Gordon's introduction to the game was at primary school. Having been awarded the junior player of the year award at his club, Stoneywood-Dyce, in 1999, Gordon was named man of the match in the European U15 championship match against Denmark in Denmark in 2002. He has made a habit of achieving such awards as he was named player of the tournament at the European U17 championships in Denmark 2003 before being selected for the tournament 'dream team' at the ICC European U19 world cup qualifying competition in Holland, also in 2003. He is a club-mate of skipper Kyle Coetzer. The youngest member of the squad, Gordon's idol is Darren Gough (England) all of whose books he has read.

Margie Gibson
Born: Zimbabwe

Margie Gibson, a 41 year-old Zimbabwean born physiotherapist, is responsible for the health of the team during their tough cricket campaign. "My job is to keep the guys healthy out there. The guys will not be used to the heat in Bangladesh. Out there, they will be encouraged to cover up, use sunscreen, wear a hat and above all, drink plenty of fluids. Even being slightly dehydrated can significantly adversely affect performance. The team will also be discouraged from trying every new curry dish on the menu!"

Sean Weeraratna
DOB: 21.11.1985
Born: Morija, Lesotho
Batting: Right hand bat
Bowling: Right arm medium

Sean was introduced to cricket by his father who also played at a high standard. As well as cricket he plays rugby and golf and has represented Edinburgh at hockey. He has represented his district at cricket at all age levels from U13 to U19. Sean plays club cricket at George Heriot's FP along with Scotland teammate Ali Farooq. As a batting all rounder, Sean's cricketing hero is Jacques Kallis (South Africa) who he regards as the best all rounder in the world and also one of the best batsmen.

Shahzad Rafiq
DOB: 23.04.1985

There being no family involvement in the game, Shahzad's interest in cricket came later than most players and followed a holiday in Pakistan. His other sports are rugby and boxing. As a boxer he has been West District champion at his weight. Shazad has represented Scotland at U17 and U19 level. He says that playing for his country has given him a great sense of achievement and wearing the thistle makes him very proud to be Scottish. He has high hopes of making a significant contribution to the squad in Bangladesh and would like to follow in the footsteps of his inspiration, Wasim Akram (Pakistan). The great all-round performances in one-day cricket are the reason Wasim is his favourite player.

David Bill
DOB: 15.01.1986

David is another member of the squad who was introduced to the game by his father who also played. In addition to cricket, David plays some hockey, golf and football. He has represented his country in four different age groups and has been an integral part of the U19 squad for the last two years. He was a member of the U19 team, which became European Champions in 2002, and last year in the Scotland U17 team which won the European Championships in Denmark. David is a talented all rounder, being a middle order right hand bat and a leg spinner who can turn the ball a great deal. He has played regular senior cricket with his club, Uddingston, which was promoted to the Scottish National Cricket League (Premier Division) in 2003, since he was 16. Without doubt, his greatest scalp when bowling was that of Rahul Dravid in a game against the MCC in 2003. Shane Warne (Australia) is his favourite player thanks to what he has done to raise the profile of leg spinning, an art in which David is looking to continue to develop.

Willie Morton (Coach)

A left arm spinner and lower middle order bat, Willie spent three years on staff of Warwickshire County Cricket Club. He has been the national U19 coach since 1998, including coaching the team, which represented Scotland at the 2002 U19 Youth World Cup in New Zealand. Willie is head sports groundsman and cricket coach at George Watson's College in Edinburgh. Formerly a professional/coach in Scotland with Watsonians, he still plays in the Scottish National Cricket League with Penicuik.

Alistair 'Sam' Scott (Assistant Coach)

Educated in Glasgow, Sam also attended Glasgow University and Jordanhill College of Education. For the past 20 years he has acted as Principal Teacher of Physical Education at Notre Dame High School, Greenock. His entire playing career was spent at Ferguslie where he has been junior convener since 1992. Sam is delighted that several of his club's young players have progressed to the stage where they are members of this squad. Since 1997 he has managed the Scotland U13 side and was youth match convener for Scottish Cricket between 2000 and 2002.
