Title holders Holland have been beaten by Italy in the first major upset of the tournament Ð going down by one run. And two runs was the margin in another sensational finish between ECB and Scotland with the Scots plunging to defeat by losing six wickets in the last two overs. The other Division 1 winners were Ireland who beat Denmark by 98 runs.
Germany led the way in Division 2 with a massive 356 for 7 against Austria and theyÕve been joined at the top by Gibraltar and Portugal.
Italy batted first against the Dutch champions and posted 144 in which Joseph Scuderi top scored with 64. The title holders were reduced to 16 for 4, then recovered to 125 for 5 before crumbling to 142 for 9 at the end of the 50 overs
The ECB-Scotland match was even more breathtaking with the Scots losing their last SIX wickets for ONE RUN Ð the last falling to the fifth ball of the last over.
Ireland set the Danes a formidable 282 to win thanks in large measure to 70 from Andrew White and a half century by skipper Jason Molins. Gary Neely grabbed three quick wickets and Denmark never really recovered to finish 183 for 7 Ð 98 runs short.
GermanyÕs Mark Brodersen hit 83 in his sideÕs huge total against Austria and captain Hamid Bhatti and Ayoob Pasha also weighed in with half centuries. Austria were never in the hunt as Zajir Ahmad took five wickets to help dismiss them for 76 and take his side to a whopping 280 run victory.
Gibraltar took the honours against France by 20 runs despite a gallant 56 by wicket keeper Gareth Edwards and Israel went down heavily to Portugal.
